Terpenes

Terpenes are a class of organic molecules produced by various plants, such as fruits, flowers, and cannabis. The terpene profile of a given cannabis product will strongly influence the user’s sense of smell and taste of their preferred flower, extract, or concentrate and may influence the therapeutic experience the products give them.

While cannabinoids like THC and CBD create much of the buzz surrounding medical and adult-use cannabis, terpenes are of increasing interest due to their reported therapeutic efforts, further supported by recent findings suggesting a synergistic relationship, or “the entourage effect” between common cannabinoid and terpene profiles.

To date, there are more than 20,000 identified terpenes, with over 100 unique terpene compounds produced by the cannabis plant. Major terpenes commonly found in cannabis can be found throughout our daily lives including research informed evidence of the potential pharmacological effects of terpenes in humans, such as:

  • Hops & Lemongrass—high in beta-myrcene, suggested to act as a gentle sedative and may carry inflammation-reducing and chronic pain management properties.
  • Oranges & Lemons—high in limonene, suggested to enhance mood and may carry antifungal and antibacterial properties.
  • Black Pepper & Cloves—high in beta-caryophyllene, suggested to provide an uplifted and relaxed sensation and may carry anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Basil & Sage—high in humulene, suggested to reduce pain and serve as a mild sedative and may carry appetite-suppression and inflammation reduction properties.
  • Mint & Lavender—high in linalool, suggested to reduce anxiety and may carry calming and relaxing effects to aid sleep.

Mint & Lavender—high in linalool, suggested to reduce anxiety and may carry calming and relaxing effects to aid sleep. US Cannalytics utilizes gas chromatography (GC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) to quantify the concentrations of up to 24 active terpenes in a wide array of medicinal and adult-use cannabis products.

We analyze all medical and adult-use cannabis products utilizing our ISO / IEC 17025:2017 accredited methods for terpene potency and profiling.
